Aaron Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers Won't be limited in OTAs
Fri, May 3, 2024, 3:30 PM
According to coach Robert Saleh, Rodgers will have "no restrictions" when the Jets begin their OTA practices May 20, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.
Analysis: After suffering a torn left Achilles four snaps into his first season with the Jets, Rodgers underwent surgery to address the issue Sept. 14. While the veteran signal-caller didn't see any game action prior to the conclusion of the 2023 campaign, he did practice on a limited basis down the stretch. With that in mind, it's not surprising that the 40-year-old is on track to practice in full during phase three of New York's OTAs later this month. When it comes to his supporting cast this coming season, Tyrod Taylor is slated to serve as the team's No. 2 QB, top running back Breece Hall is further removed from the ACL tear that derailed his 2022 season, and the team's wideout corps has been fortified by free-agent addition Mike Williams (knee) and 2024 third-rounder Malachi Corley. Still, Rodgers' fantasy upside hinges on whether he's able to avoid any setbacks as he looks to regain his pre-injury form.
Zach Wilson
Zach Wilson May stay if no trade happens
Mon, Mar 25, 2024, 4:34 PM
Jets chairman Woody Johnson suggested Monday that if the Jets don't trade Wilson, they intend to keep the QB, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: That said, Cimini notes that the Jets remain motivated to deal Wilson, who last month was granted permission to speak to other teams about a possible trade. Given that Tyrod Taylor was recently signed by the Jets to back up Aaron Rodgers (Achilles), a change of scenery would no doubt benefit Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. In three seasons since then, the 24-year-old has compiled a 12-21 record as a starter and thrown more interceptions (25) than TD passes (23).
Mike Williams
Mike Williams On track for Week 1
Wed, Mar 20, 2024, 12:11 PM
Williams noted Wednesday that he's "on schedule" in his recovery from knee surgery and expects to be ready for the start of the 2024 season, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Williams, who tore his ACL in Week 3 last season while with the Chargers, said that he's four and a half months removed from getting his knee repaired. With that in mind, Williams -- who signed a one-year deal with the Jets on Tuesday with a maximum value of $15 million -- was non-committal about whether he'll be ready for the start of training camp in late July, according to Cimini. Once the 29-year-old receiver moves past his injury, he'll provide the Jets with a field-stretching option and big-bodied red-zone target to pair with No. 1 wideout Garrett Wilson. In terms of opportunity, Williams appears to have found a good fit with New York as part of a 1-2 punch at wideout in an offense that will be helmed by quarterback Aaron Rodgers (Achilles), who's also returning from a season-ending injury.
Mike Williams
Mike Williams Heading to AFC East
Tue, Mar 19, 2024, 4:03 PM
Williams is set to sign a one-year deal with the Jets, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Per Schefter, Williams' deal with New York is worth up to $15 million. The 2017 first-rounder is bouncing back from a torn ACL that he suffered in Week 3 while with the Chargers last season. Given the timing of the injury, Williams should be ready to go before the start of the 2024 season, at which point he'll provide the Jets with a viable starting wideout option opposite Garrett Wilson.
Tyrod Taylor
Tyrod Taylor Expected to join Jets
Mon, Mar 11, 2024, 10:50 PM
Taylor has agreed on terms to a two-year deal with the Jets, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.
Analysis: Taylor is staying in New York but will sport a different jersey. The journeyman signal caller accumulated 1,399 yards and six touchdowns through the air across 14 games (five starts) during his two-year stint with the Giants. With 58 career starts under his belt, he is a safe veteran choice to back up Aaron Rodgers (Achilles), as the Jets were determined to improve in that department following the 2023 season.
Kenny Yeboah
Kenny Yeboah Sticking around New York
Sun, Mar 10, 2024, 9:20 PM
Yeboah and the Jets agreed on a one-year contract Sunday.
Analysis: Yeboah will return to the Jets for a fourth season with the team after he recorded two catches for 28 yards while appearing in five games with New York in 2023. With C.J. Uzomah no longer part of the organization, more snaps could be available at tight end for the 25-year-old in 2024.
Aaron Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers Hopes to play multiple more seasons
Fri, Mar 8, 2024, 8:49 AM
Rodgers (Achilles) recently told the Look Into It Podcast that he hopes to play 2-4 more years in the NFL, per John Breech of CBS Sports.
Analysis: Rodgers hinted at a multi-year commitment when he was traded to the Jets last offseason, with his contract supporting that notion via full guarantees for his compensation in 2023 and 2024. He famously played just four snaps in the first season before tearing his left Achilles' tendon, and he was unable to return even with an aggressive rehab plan. Rodgers did practice with the Jets toward the end of the season -- including as the first-team QB in Week 18 -- but wasn't able to resume sprinting at full strength before the conclusion of the campaign. He previously mentioned wanting to play two more years beyond 2023, and even in the recent podcast interview he acknowledged he'd need "good fortune" to make it three or four more seasons. Rodgers turned 40 in December and should be back at full strength for the start of the Jets offseason program this spring.
Zach Wilson
Zach Wilson Gets green light to pursue trade
Wed, Feb 28, 2024, 11:59 AM
General manager Joe Douglas said Wednesday that Wilson (concussion) has been given permission to seek a trade, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Wilson ended the 2023 season on injured reserve while recovering from concussion symptoms, which cost him the Jets' final three games. The 2021 second overall pick's time being up in New York almost looks inevitable at this point, especially after he was moved back and forth between the starting lineup and bench throughout the 2023 campaign. If a trade partner doesn't emerge for Wilson, the Jets could opt to waive him rather than keeping him in the fold at a cap hit of $11.18 million for 2024. In any case, the Jets seem likely to prioritize an upgrade at the backup quarterback spot behind Aaron Rodgers (Achilles), with Trevor Siemian and Brett Rypien being the other signal-callers on the roster.
C.J. Uzomah
C.J. Uzomah Likely to be released by New York
Mon, Feb 19, 2024, 3:11 PM
Uzomah (knee) is expected to be released by the Jets this offseason, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The veteran tight end finished the 2023 season on injured reserve after spraining his MCL in Week 13. His signing has proved to be a disaster for Jets GM Joe Douglas, as Uzomah has produced just 29 catches for 290 yards and three touchdowns across 27 contests with the team. Entering the final year of a three-year, $24 million deal, Uzomah is due an $8 million salary in 2024. The Jets can save $5.3 million against the cap by releasing the 31-year-old, leaving behind over $5.9 million in dead money.
Aaron Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers Starting QB in last three practice
Wed, Jan 17, 2024, 5:40 PM
Rodgers (Achilles) led the Jets' first-team offense in the final three practices of the season, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Rodgers didn't return to game action after tearing his Achilles just four snaps into his Jets tenure, but he was activated from injured reserve down the stretch, allowing him to practice with the team. After running the scout team and working at less than full speed in his first few weeks back, Rodgers quarterbacked the first-team offense for the last three practices, which were closed to the media. His teammates raved about Rodgers' performances in the final three practices, suggesting the veteran quarterback's Achilles is at or close to full health heading into the offseason.
Nick Bawden
Nick Bawden Sticking around New York
Tue, Jan 9, 2024, 6:03 PM
Bawden signed to a reserve/future contract with the Jets on Tuesday, Ethan Greenberg of the team's official website reports.
Analysis: Bawden spent all but one of the team's 17 games during the 2023 campaign as a member of their active roster and he'll now stick around for the offseason. The 27-year-old will look to operate as the team's primary fullback again in 2024.
Lance McCutcheon
Lance McCutcheon Staying with Jets
Mon, Jan 8, 2024, 6:06 PM
The Jets signed McCutcheon to a reserve/future contract Monday.
Analysis: McCutcheon landed on the Jets' practice squad Oct. 24 after being cut by the Texans two weeks prior. He did not appear in a game this season and will have a chance to crack New York's 53-man roster for 2024.
Malik Taylor
Malik Taylor Remains with Jets
Mon, Jan 8, 2024, 6:05 PM
The Jets signed Taylor to a reserve/future contract Monday.
Analysis: Taylor spent the season on the Jets' practice squad. He was called up three times and accumulated two catches on four targets for 13 yards. Taylor will have a chance to compete for a spot on the Jets' 53-man roster for the 2024 season.
Garrett Wilson
Garrett Wilson Fine after neck injury Sunday
Mon, Jan 8, 2024, 9:51 AM
Speaking with the media Monday, Wilson said his neck is fine after he was forced to leave Week 18's win over the Patriots, Connor Hughes of SNY.tv reports.
Analysis: Wilson took a glancing blow to the head from New England safety Jabrill Peppers in the season finale and exited after 38 offensive snaps. The wideout underwent an evaluation for a concussion and was diagnosed with a neck issue. It doesn't sound like he's dealing with anything significant, and Wilson should have a normal offseason after catching 95 passes for 1,042 yards and three touchdowns this season. Wilson's 168 targets were the fourth most in the NFL, trailing only CeeDee Lamb (181), Davante Adams (175) and Tyreek Hill (171). Getting Aaron Rodgers (Achilles) back healthy for 2024 should provide a big boost to Wilson's efficiency and touchdown upside.
Allen Lazard
Allen Lazard Big-money bust in 2023
Sun, Jan 7, 2024, 10:49 PM
Lazard finished the season with 23 catches for 311 yards and one touchdown on 49 targets.
Analysis: Lazard signed a four-year, $44 million contract with the Jets in the offseason and was expected to offer a familiar face on the outside for Aaron Rodgers, but after Rodgers tore his Achilles in Week 1, Lazard failed to establish any chemistry with New York's other quarterbacks despite handling a starting role on the outside for most of the season. He appeared in 14 games, sitting two out as a healthy scratch and missing one due to an illness. The Jets have almost no choice but to bring Lazard back given his contract, but they'll almost certainly look for an upgrade at wide receiver to start opposite Garrett Wilson and push Lazard down the depth chart in 2024.
Jason Brownlee
Jason Brownlee Non-factor in Week 18 win
Sun, Jan 7, 2024, 10:22 PM
Brownlee didn't catch his lone target in Sunday's 17-3 win over the Patriots.
Analysis: Trevor Siemian completed only eight passes in the snowy win, and none of those completions went to Brownlee. The Jets' lack of depth at wide receiver paved the way for Brownlee to see consistent playing time on the outside down the stretch, but the undrafted rookie out of Southern Miss didn't do much with the opportunities, catching five of eight targets for 56 yards and a touchdown across seven appearances.
Xavier Gipson
Xavier Gipson Finishes first year with 21 catches
Sun, Jan 7, 2024, 10:15 PM
Gispon caught one of five targets for four yards in Sunday's 17-3 win over the Patriots. He finishes the season with 21 catches for 229 yards on 38 targets.
Analysis: Gipson didn't score a receiving touchdown in his rookie season, but he posted a rushing score and a punt return touchdown. He held down the punt and kick returner roles for the entire season -- posting 319 punt return yards and 511 kickoff return yards -- and saw more involvement on offense in the second half of the campaign. The 5-foot-9 Gipson likely profiles as more of a depth contributor than a consistent starter at wide receiver, but a spot on the 53-man roster will be his to lose next season.
Randall Cobb
Randall Cobb Just five catches all season
Sun, Jan 7, 2024, 10:09 PM
Cobb caught his lone target for four yards in Sunday's 17-3 win over the Patriots. He finishes the season with five catches for 39 yards and a touchdown on 17 targets.
Analysis: Cobb appeared in 11 games for the Jets, but the 33-year-old wide receiver didn't look like he had much gas left in the tank in 2023. The veteran slot receiver topped 800 yards four times in his career but only once since 2015, and Sunday may have marked his last NFL action.
Tyler Conklin
Tyler Conklin Three straight years of 87 targets
Sun, Jan 7, 2024, 10:02 PM
Conklin caught two of three targets for 16 yards in Sunday's 17-3 win over the Patriots. He finishes the season with 61 catches on 87 targets for 621 yards.
Analysis: Conklin finished with exactly 87 targets for the third consecutive season, and he caught exactly 61 of those passes for the second time in that stretch. After scoring three touchdowns in each of those previous two seasons, Conklin failed to find the end zone in 2023. He'll likely reprise his role atop the tight end depth chart in the final year of his contract with the Jets next season.
Israel Abanikanda
Israel Abanikanda Three carries in season finale
Sun, Jan 7, 2024, 9:58 PM
Abanikanda rushed three times for six yards and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 17-3 win over the Patriots.
Analysis: Abanikanda didn't see much work while Breece Hall rumbled for 178 yards and a touchdown on a career-high 37 rushing attempts in snowy conditions. Hall's the clear lead back in New York heading into the 2024 season, but Abanikanda could be his top backup if the Jets don't add reinforcements in the backfield. Abanikanda saw limited action after being drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, finishing his rookie season with 22 carries for 70 yards, in addition to seven catches for 43 yards on 11 targets.
